There is a bar & grill type restaurant adjacent to the trail at HJ. That section now runs along afew already-built, paved and bike-able trailways: the North County Trailway, South County Trailway, Old Put are a few (and theyre great). I rode north past Tonetta and up towards Patterson. I'll be avoiding the section from Wappingers to Fishkill from now on, it's far too depressing. The Walkway Over the Hudson is stunning and there are snack trucks and compost toilets just over it as you cross westward. Would like to take this time to thank all that help keep this trail in the wonderful condition that it is in. I ride about three times a week. Finally with millions of dollars promised to the Hudson Valley Greenway this could be just the place to spend it. They should rename it the funeral mile. Recently, I visited the tracks. The Dutchess County Trail was in really great shape. on the 16th of this month I was at the WOTH to check on progress of the new elevator - as I was at the east end I also checked on the progress of the connector trail Dutchess RT stage 5 - I had seen that the connector trail had been paved - all that remains is the SR 55 overpass brdge - phase 4 - to be put into place to complete the Maybrook trailway system - Hopewell Jct. From here to Pumphouse road is a "missing link" in the trail. Through the trees, I could see a giant old trestle bridge. Its well maintained with plenty of benches to rest and a mixture of sun and shady spots. There were a few scenic areas but I was expecting more. There is construction equipment at the west end, but not much happening. In Pawling, just north of Whaley Lake, the trailway intersects with the Appalachian Trail. There were a few short slushy sections and a head wind, and the trail's surprisingly hilly, but I got to Hopewell Junction in about two hours. Rode the northern part of this trail on 4/26/21 from Hopewell Junction to Holmes as part of my ride from New Paltz. Except for either end, it is a somewhat secluded trail and very quiet. There is a section where you ride over a large pond on a bridge that is nice. Okay, I road the whole trail, but on 2 days separated by a month. The sections through Lake Tonetta, the Great Swamp, and the Ice Pond are very picturesque, with occasional view of hills in the distance along with the lake views. The thing that stood out to us as we rode was the trail signs directing you to the different points and the entrance and exit ramps to the many parking areas and local road access points along the way with the many benches to sit if you want to take a break. Not-so-Good: The portapotty at the Hopewell Junction depot was disgusting and clearly had not been serviced in a very long time. with a kiosk - at the northern trail head terminus (and will be forever) at Morgan Lake technicaly in the CITY of Poughkkepsie there is a small like county park within the Morgan Lake city park with benches,a kiosk,flowers and now a new memorial for Michael Murphy - the southern end does not go all the way to the old depot in Hopewell Jct. If you're a local, you will know where the multitude of lots are, but since I live an hour away, I really depended on the app which led me astray. This final phase of the rail trail encompasses more than just the new 900 foot 5 span bridge over SR 55,as I found out when I was at Old Manchester Rd.,behind Page Lumber,recently. (Please DO NOT PARK at the apartment building at the corner of SR-292 and Holmes as that is private property.). This is a very nice paved trial so if you have a race bike some good training here. Not really anything to be concerned aboutvery doable, and we enjoyed the gradual downhill for the second half of the ride. In July the trail had ripe raspberries all along it for snacking. The trail travels from Hopewell Junction to Brewster and is considered to be easy to moderate with few hills. The Maybrook section of the bike path would pass them on the opposite shore. I could see some places where there was a fence separating the trail from the railroad, but there was no way to get to the trail that I could find. I biked from Brewster to Poughkeepsie on March 12, once it finally warmed up a bit. My husband and I ride our bikes here and love it! It is shady and flat as a pancake except for the normal bridge crossing. They are also part of the Empire State Trail, a developing 750-mile trail network spanning the state from New York City to Canada and Buffalo to Albany.Traveling east from Poughkeepsie, the route passes a large golf course and Morgan Lake Park, a popular spot for fishing. I highly recommend it. Lots of parking along the way. Did it 3 times during the week, so no idea whats its like on the weekend. Well worth a light rain to get wonderful fall color photos. Paved section enter off N. Main St behind Kobackers to Peaceable Hill Rd. Not sure about the intent of this, as the other section from Overrocker Rd to Morgan lake (about 2.5 miles) doesn't have this 'feature'. As of 4 July 2016. All in all the river trail is very nice, even with a couple of miles of in road biking. Currently the paved section that heads north stops underneath Tonetta Lake Road which is just south of I-84. The trail delivers on attractive scenery and storied railroad history of the Hudson Valley, running through woodlands, along picturesque lakes and across iron truss bridges. After the Whaley Lake continuing south there is a slight decline which did make it a a bit of a grind on the way back but really nothing to be afraid of. The scenery is nice but it is very monotonous with lakes being the only real variation to the trees and the disused railroad that encompasses the rest of the Maybrook Trailway. The only reason I did not give this trail 5 stars was because of lack of and condition of bathroom facilities. 6, go down the hill, turn left again on Rt 6 and then ride up the hill past the Honda dealership where another set of stairs on the left will bring you back to the trail.
